An Eco-Friendly Earth Day in Hawaii
April 17 ,2025

Hawaii is one of the most ecologically diverse places in the world, but also one of the most fragile. The ecosystem found here is foundational to the legends and culture of our beautiful islands and something we hold dear to our hearts. Here at Prince Waikiki, we all do our part to protect the environment — putting time and energy into cultivating partnerships and supporting meaningful programs to protect and preserve Hawaii’s valuable landscapes for generations to come. With Earth Day happening on April 22, we wanted to show you how to make eco-conscious choices while visiting O‘ahu and Prince Waikiki.

Your Sustainable Hawaii Vacation

Nature and community go hand-in-hand around here — and by simply staying at our hotel, you are helping to fulfill the Prince Commitment. Created to support our community and the initiatives that align best with our core values, $1 from each night of your stay is helping make our community stronger. Several initiatives benefit from the Prince Commitment, including Make-A-Wish® Hawaii, the Honolulu Museum of Art (where guests of Prince Waikiki receive free admission for two), the Bishop Museum (where guests of Prince Waikiki receive free admission for two adults and two children), and Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiʻi (SCH) — an organization directly impacting the health of Hawaii’s land and waters. SCH promotes education, clean-ups, and additional programs that improve the quality of life for locals, visitors, and the planet. See where your donation is going by joining one of their events and witnessing for yourself how a small change can make a big impact.

The Prince Green Initiative

At Prince Waikiki, we participate in several energy conservation efforts and constantly strive to reduce our use of single-use plastics. These practices are all part of the Prince Green Initiatives.

The program is seen in every facet of your stay at Prince Waikiki, from your room — where you’ll find two reusable aluminum water bottles, helping us keep nearly 300,000 plastic water bottles out of landfills every year — to our exceptional restaurants, including 100 Sails Restaurant & Bar, which sources produce from small, local farms. So, take this as permission to order a little something extra, it’s good for everyone!

Sometimes, not all the food we source t makes its way to the menu or your plates. Still, we ensure no food goes to waste, thanks to our Zero Food Waste policy. We’ve partnered with Aloha Harvest to collect unused and untouched food products twice weekly to redistribute to those in need. Furthermore, any remaining food waste is donated to a local pig farm.

Explore Honolulu and Waikiki

Prince Waikiki is conveniently located, so amenities and hot spots are just steps away. Whether you want to soak in the sun and take a leisurely walk or hop on a Biki Bike from one of our 14 docks, there are countless wonders you can check out while being mindful of your transit impact. Honolulu is home to the famous Diamond Head State Monument, a historic hiking trail found in the bowl of a crater, and just outside the urban core is Mānoa Falls Trail, perfect for families with young children.

O‘ahu is home to over 225 miles of coastline and 125 beaches. Two-mile-long Waikiki Beach is steps from our door, providing the perfect landscape for stunning sunsets, paddleboarders, cookouts, and all-day hangs. Sandy Beach, near Koko Crater, is popular with locals who love to surf. You can find some of the best surfers in the world here, catching rays and waves! Surrounded by so much nature, every day feels like Earth Day here. How lucky are we?

Eco-Tourism on O‘ahu

Eco-tourism businesses prioritize responsible, environmentally conscious travel that benefits local communities and protects the environment using sustainable practices. Some of our favorite experiences include visiting Loko Ea Fishpond to learn about Hawaiian traditions and conservation and the Mālama Experience at Kualoa Ranch, where you can try your hand at sustainable farming. These experiences offer a glimpse into Oʻahu’s captivating beauty and cultural heritage while contributing to its preservation in a meaningful fashion.
