All About Prince Kuhio Day
February 27 ,2025

Each year, on March 26, Hawaii comes alive with the spirit of aloha for Prince Kūhiō Day. This special day honors Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, a visionary leader known as the “People’s Prince,” who dedicated his life to championing Native Hawaiian rights, preserving cultural traditions, and strengthening his community — a legacy that continues to shape the islands today.

During this time, lively parades, cultural exhibits, and local gatherings invite locals and visitors alike to experience Hawaii’s rich heritage. And with Prince Waikiki as your home base, you’ll have a front-row seat to all the festivities. Here’s everything you need to know about Prince Kūhiō Day and how to make the most of it during your stay!

Meet Prince Kūhiō

Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole, born into Hawaiian royalty on March 26, 1871, was destined to lead as the next ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom before the monarchy’s overthrow in 1893. Despite the political shift, Kūhiō’s devotion to his people never wavered. After pursuing his education abroad, he returned home and served as the islands’ delegate to the U.S. Congress for nearly two decades.

One of Kūhiō’s most remarkable achievements was the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920. This groundbreaking initiative allocated over 200,000 acres of land to establish a permanent homeland for Native Hawaiians. This landmark legislation ensured that future generations would always have land to call their own.

Beyond his political and cultural contributions, Prince Kūhiō also helped introduce the sport of surfing to the world. In 1885, he and his brothers brought the sport to California. By 1890, they were riding waves in England, igniting a global fascination with Hawaii’s beloved sport.

Honoring “The People’s Prince”

Celebrated annually since 1949, Prince Kūhiō Day honors the remarkable life and enduring legacy of one of Hawaii’s most influential figures. While schools and government offices close for the day, the islands become a hub of festivals, ceremonies, and educational events celebrating Hawaiian culture and history.

One of the biggest highlights of the holiday, the Prince Kūhiō Parade brings the streets of Waikiki to life with hula dancers, live music, and beautifully decorated floats. The parade kicks off at 5:00 PM on Kapolei Hale, making its way along the Kapolei Parkway before reaching Ka Makana Ali’i Shopping Center. This special celebration of Prince Kūhiō brings together community members to remember and honor his legacy.

Embrace Kūhiō’s Love for the Ocean

Kūhiō was a passionate waterman with a deep love for the ocean. In his honor, communities across Hawaii organize canoe regattas, outrigger paddling events, and surf competitions, celebrating his passion for the sea.

Kuhio Beach in Waikiki is a prime spot to watch paddlers race through the waves. Feeling inspired? Dive in and take a surf lesson! Waikiki’s gentle, rolling waves are perfect for beginners and offer an unforgettable chance to catch your first ride in one of the most iconic surf spots in the world.

Explore Cultural Landmarks

For those looking to pay their respects, a visit to the Royal Mausoleum in Nu‘uanu offers a meaningful experience. Kūhiō is laid to rest alongside other Hawaiian royals, and each year, officials and community leaders hold ceremonial tributes in his honor.
